Castlewellan Forest Park - Historic Garden Tour EHOD 2024

Castlewellan Forest Park, Forest Park Glen, Castlewellan, County Down, BT31 9BU
Castlewellan Arboretum

About

Castlewellan Arboretum is an arboretum of great historic importance. The walled garden dates from the 1750's and was originally a kitchen garden and orchard, created by William Annesley.

In the 1850's the garden had a major transformation under the 4th Earl, William Richard Annesley, who built a glasshouse range along with new paths, fountains, and trees. After his death in 1874 he was succeeded by his brother Hugh who continued with collecting trees from all over the world, resulting in one of the finest gardens in the country.

Today we have 12 acres with 62 champion trees including the second highest in Ireland. Conservation work continues including the rebuilding of two of the Victorian glasshouses.

The tour will start from beside the Tea Kiosk in the Main Carpark.
