Whether it’s luxury, low-budget or a family friendly place to rest your head, everyone who spends a night in Derry-Londonderry is guaranteed one thing - a very warm welcome. Derry-Londonderry prides itself on its people and their warmth. The standard of accommodation in this city is second to none and there is ample room for all budgets and all tastes.
To get the most from the city’s unique atmosphere, consider staying within the city walls. This is home to some of the best hotels in Derry-Londonderry. There are also several options just outside the walls that offer a comfortable alternative, all within walking distance of everything you’ll want to experience in Derry-Londonderry. We’ve included some of our recommendations below.
As you can guess from its name, Bishop’s Gate Hotel, is close to one of the city wall’s seven gates. The building itself is historically significant. Local gentry who fought in the Crimean War used this spot as the Northern Counties Club. It gradually became a place for local businessmen and intellectuals to meet, eat and shoot some billiards. Among its famous visitors were Winston Churchill, W.B. Yeats and Bernard Montgomery. Today this top-class hotel offers several rooms, including a spacious penthouse suite and a cosier, junior deluxe suite. It also boasts excellent dining options and a fitness suite for working off that fine food.
The Shipquay Hotel (4*) is a luxurious and intimate boutique hotel overlooking the city walls and the famous Guildhall. The origins of this handsome listed heritage building date back to 1895 but its 21 bedrooms are contemporary, with top of the range features and decoration. This is a lovely place to stay in a central location.
If you’re going down the self-catering route, then the Palace Street Apartments (5*) on the corner of Bishop Street and Palace Street are an excellent option. Until recently, this old redbrick townhouse was a clubhouse for members of the Royal Air Force. In 2017, the current owners bought and converted the rooms into the three luxury apartments that you see today. Each apartment has two bedrooms and two shower rooms. They are clean and spacious and above all, close to all local attractions and amenities.
A hearty breakfast, a warm welcome and overnight options for every budget are what marks the Bridge B&B (3*) out as a great place to stay in Derry-Londonderry. This family run B&B is exactly the type of experience that visitors to Northern Ireland come for. Don’t be surprised if you end up being best friends with your hosts by the end of your stay. Although outside the city walls, this B&B overlooks the River Foyle and is a mere two-minute ramble across the Craigavon Bridge and into the city.
The Station B&B (4*) is also situated outside the city walls but is an easy walk from the Guildhall. Owner Ursula Walsh is a Derry native and has been welcoming visitors to Derry-Londonderry for decades. She knows every nook and cranny of the city. This is a peaceful and luxurious place to retreat to after a busy day enjoying all that Derry-Londonderry has to offer.
If you’re looking for something a little funky then Art House is the spot for you. Located just outside the walls of Derry-Londonderry, Art House is a stunning 9-bedroom period property located on a quiet residential street. Inside, the entrance halls and apartments are laid out with art deco and 1960’s inspired furniture. It is budget friendly and comfortable. The same business runs the Jazz House just up the road - also worth exploring.
No matter where you go in the city, you’re going to get a warm embrace, a hearty meal and a comfortable bed for the night. Derry-Londonderry is ready to be your home away from home.
