What's On in County Down

Stunning coastlines, towering hills, and charming towns — that's County Down! After all, this county is home to the highest mountain in Northern Ireland. A trip to the Mourne County is sure to leave you feeling upbeat and positive, with everything that it has to offer.  From lively festivals celebrating local food to fun-filled days at historic castles, there's always something new to discover in this beautiful part of Northern Ireland. 

Dragonfly Festival (Sun 19 Jul - Sun 30 Aug)

Discover dragonflies this summer at Castle Espie with a varied programme of family activities across the wetlands. Visitors can follow an interactive trail to learn about the dragonfly’s lifecycle, try pond dipping to spot young nymphs beneath the water, or join craft workshops on Tuesdays. Weekends offer plenty to see and do as well, featuring circus performers every weekend and live music on Sundays.

Full Moon Paddle (Wed 29 Jul)

Experience Strangford Lough from a whole new perspective with a Full Moon Paddle. Setting off at twilight, you'll explore the calm waters and quiet islands by kayak, paddleboard, or canoe under the guidance of an instructor. If the sky is clear, you'll enjoy excellent views of the stars and the moon. You will then head back to shore to warm up with hot chocolate and treats.

Wake The Giant (Sat 1 - Sun 2 Aug)

Warrenpoint comes to life each year for the Wake the Giant Festival. This weekend event celebrates local history and legends with live music, street performances, a food feast, and plenty of activities for children. Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and welcomed by friendly locals, it is a great time to visit Warrenpoint for a fun coastal trip with the family!

Open House Festival (Sat 1 - Mon 31 Aug)

Discover the Open House Festival, bringing together a full month of music, comedy, film, and local food events. Organised by a local regeneration charity, the annual festival features both free and ticketed performances across the city. Key venues include the Walled Garden at Bangor Castle and the restored Court House on the seafront, alongside free Sunday afternoon live music in Ward Park. The festival offers plenty to see and do during a visit to the coast, so come along to avoid missing out!
