About
Connected by a narrow goose-neck of the River Bann to the larger Lough Neagh, Lough Beg is home to historic Church Island, nestled in the natural migratory habitat of a diversity of waterfowl. As well as the surviving remnants of a Christian church, the location has earlier evidence of a healing well nearby.
This moderate lakeside walk on minor road and trail, takes in Longpoint Wood Nature Reserve and pays homage to the natural flora and fauna along the lough-shore as well as the poetry of Seamus Heaney. It also explores the legacy of the infamous Bishop Hervey (1730-1803) who built Ballyscullion House on the nearby shores of Lough beg and is a must for people interested in preserving the natural land and water-scape with its many gifts.
