International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

About

Learn how products like tobacco, cotton and sugar, cultivated by enslaved people, became part of the local economy in Ulster. Visit the Rogan House in America and find out how the former enslaved people created their own community in the face of many difficulties after gaining freedom in 1865.

Watch a re-enactment of Mary Anne McCracken giving out handbills at the dockside gallery, as she once did at the Belfast docks, while asking emigrants not to get involved with slavery in America. Watch the short film Eliza (2023) directed by Delisa Richardson and Dan Steadman exploring the life of Eliza Rose, an enslaved women of the Campbell Family – emigrants whose original Ulster home is in the museum.
