Making your way around Northern Ireland by road couldn’t be easier. You can bring your own car on the ferries, or hire one from your point of entry.

Car hire in Northern Ireland is straightforward but here are some helpful tips to consider:

  • Before booking, check the total price and take optional extras such as car seats and sat navs into consideration.
  • Check if there are any cross-border charges if you are planning to travel to the Republic of Ireland.  Most companies will charge if you cross the border so be mindful of this when booking.
  • If you are travelling by air and your flight is late, check that your chosen company will hold your booking.  Some companies will not hold your booking so please check beforehand so you’re not left stranded.  If you find that you are going to be late, get in touch with the car rental company as soon as possible to let them know.
  • Ensure that you bring the correct documents with you – check with your chosen company what these are as you may be refused your car if you don’t have the full, correct documentation.
  • Ensure that you have the right level of insurance cover and choose the right one for you.  Check with the car rental company what you are covered for and decide what extra coverage you may need – try and have this in place before arrival as the costs can be a lot higher if you arrange the extra coverage at the car rental desk.
  • You may need to pre-authorise a payment on your card – so be prepared and ensure that you have sufficient credit on your card.  This acts as a security deposit and will be used to cover any damages that might occur whilst the car is in your possession.
  • Check the vehicle thoroughly before you drive away.  Record all dents and scratches before leaving and ensure that it is signed by a car rental employee.  Upon returning the car ensure that a member of staff inspects it thoroughly in your presence – if this isn’t possible, take photographs which shows the condition of the car when it was returned by you.
