About
Nowadays it is easy to take the High Cross in Donaghmore for granted as it stands impassively, keeping watch over the comings and goings of village life. However, for early Christians this sculpture and others like it were extremely important, serving both spiritual and educational purposes. Intricately carved stone crosses stood as powerful symbols of faith and as markers for monastic communities, reflecting the growing influence of Christianity in Ireland. It is all too easy for us to underestimate how impressive such an object would have been to the local people, constituting a remarkable feat of engineering and demonstrating the incredible skill and ingenuity of carving the local sandstone. Over the centuries many of these structures have become susceptible to erosion and have in some cases suffered significant damage.
Donaghmore Historical Society is keen to raise awareness of this wonderful and historically significant feature of the village and inspire the wider community to recognise and appreciate this heritage in our midst. An exhibition in the Heritage Centre will shed light on the eroded carvings on the cross, how it came to be in its current location and general information on High Crosses in the area. There will also be guided visits to the cross and the old Donaghmore graveyard, weather permitting.
