About
Designed by architect, Joseph Vincent Downes, the Bank of Ireland building was constructed in 1929-1930, in a prime location at the corner of Royal Avenue. Finished in Portland Limestone, the building was known to many as ‘the white bank’. The building has three bays along North Street and four bays on Royal Avenue meeting at a Chamfered corner. The corner is capped by a traditional art deco style tower and clock and features decorative metal panels between the windows. Many other original features survive including elements of the banking hall and metal signage. The five-story listed building is one of Belfast’s few remaining Art Deco era buildings.
Belfast City Council purchased the building and surrounding site in 2021 as part of their plans to develop a new anchor in the city centre that includes public space, a visitor attraction and creative hub.
In 2023 TODD Architects (Belfast) together with Snϕhetta (Oslo) were appointed to lead on the design of the project.
In 2024 international exhibition designers, Ralph Appelbaum Associates joined the team as experience and exhibition designers.
The Bank of Ireland building and surrounding site will be open from 10am to 5pm on both days. Drop in to see the specially curated exhibition and to hear more about plans for the future.
