Public Transport Directions

1) From Belfast George Best (BHD) — fastest public / private option

By car / taxi (recommended if luggage / group):

Drive from BHD to Red Robin Cottage — about ≈ 40–45 minutes (≈29 miles). Driving is the fastest and simplest option; the cottage has private parking. Rome2Rio+1

By public transport (cheaper but slower / limited times):

Take a bus from Belfast City area toward Castlewellan (check Translink journey planner for exact departures). Arrive at Castlewellan Upper Square. Translink+1

From Castlewellan Upper Square catch the local Translink line 32 toward Ballyward (short ride — ≈15 minutes) or take a local taxi if times don’t match. Timetables are limited so check in advance. Rome2Rio+1

2) From Belfast International (BFS)

By car / taxi (recommended):

Driving is ~1 hour to 1h10m depending on traffic (≈36–50 miles, different route options exist). For groups or luggage, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is simplest. Rome2Rio+1

By public transport (longer, multiple changes):

Use airport buses / coaches into Belfast or Banbridge/Newry depending on timings, then Translink services into Castlewellan. From Castlewellan Upper Square take the line 32 to Ballyward or a short taxi. Public-transport routing can take several hours and includes transfers — check Translink / Rome2Rio for current combinations. Rome2Rio+1

3) From Dublin Airport (DUB)

By car / taxi (recommended for speed):

Drive north on the M1/A1 then local roads — roughly 1 h 35–1 h 50 depending on traffic (distance ~75–90 miles). Border crossing adds minimal delay with current arrangements, but allow extra time. Rome2Rio+1

By public transport (train/bus combination):

Train or coach from Dublin to Newry/Belfast, then bus (Translink Goldline 240 or local services) to Castlewellan, then line 32 or taxi to the cottage. This is feasible but slower and involves at least one transfer. Bus Times+1

4) From Newry (train or bus) — good option if guests arrive by rail

By taxi (recommended for final leg):

Newry → Castlewellan by bus/coach or taxi (short drive). From Castlewellan Upper Square take the local line 32 to Ballyward (≈15 minutes) or take a direct taxi from Newry to the cottage (~30 min drive depending on route). Bus Times+1

By public transport:

Goldline 240 or regional buses serve Castlewellan (arrive at Castlewellan Upper Square). Then local bus 32 to Ballyward. Timetables are limited — check Translink before travel. Bus Times+1

5) From Belfast City Centre / Buscentre (Great Victoria St)

By car / taxi:

Drive to Red Robin Cottage in ~45–60 minutes depending on traffic. This is simple and flexible for sightseeing before arrival. ViaMichelin+1

By public transport:

Take a Translink Goldline or regional bus toward Castlewellan (service 240 or routed services). Get off at Castlewellan Upper Square and transfer to the 32 for Ballyward, or complete the last mile by taxi. Timetables show only a few daily calls into Castlewellan so plan ahead. Translink+1

Taxi & cost tips (final-mile help)

For the final leg from Castlewellan Upper Square → Red Robin Cottage (Ballyward) many guests prefer a local taxi if bus times don’t match — the ride is short (≈10–15 minutes). Regional taxi fares will vary; estimate roughly £12–£25 depending on company, time of day and luggage. For a precise estimate use local taxi fare tools or call local firms. (Local metered/tariff references vary by jurisdiction.) Transport for Ireland+1

Practical tips to give guests

If possible, arrive by car — it’s the most convenient for this rural property (private parking available). VacationCottage.com Summer Cottages

Check Translink timetables before travel (services into Castlewellan and the local line 32 are limited and vary by day). Save screenshots of the scheduled arrival times. Translink+1

If arriving late / with luggage, pre-book a taxi from Castlewellan or from the airport for the final leg.

Provide guests a short printed/written route from their likely arrival point (airport or train station) to the cottage including the Castlewellan Upper Square wording — this avoids confusion with similar place names.
