Brandy Pad Smuggling Hike

Hike the Brandy Pad, with fully qualified mountain leaders and tour guides from the team at Mountain Ways Ireland. Trace this beautiful old Smuggling route through the heart of The High Mournes and hear about the fascinating story of how men with “hands like shovels” built all 22 miles of the Mourne wall.

Follow what is known as the brandy pad, an old path way that was used as a route for smugglers evading coast guards and revenue men. Smuggled goods were often transported on pack ponies via the Brandy Pad. Mountain Ways Ireland will guide you along this old historic route through the majestic high Mournes. Listen to the stories of the smugglers and the men who built the mighty Mourne wall.

We will have stunning views of the isolated Annalong valley, Ben Crom reservoir high in the amphitheatre of the Kilkeel river valley before dropping through the saddle known as Hares Gap towards the lovely Meelmore lodge restaurant and coffee house.Alternatively we may descend down the Glen river valley nestled between the towering Donard and Comedagh until we reach the lovely sea-side town of Newcastle.

A great medium days hiking through the heart of the High Mournes.
