About
Édouard-Alfred Martel was instrumental in shaping the science of speleology and pioneering many aspects of early modern cave exploration, including the first recorded scientific examination of the Marble Arch Cave system in 1895.
Experience the thrill of this historic exploration first-hand as you accompany Martel in an authentic re-enactment of his groundbreaking discovery of the show cave, as it was over 130 years ago. With the electric lights switched off, you’ll journey underground through the cave’s natural darkness, guided solely by candlelight and lanterns.
During this 2-hour 30-minute guided tour, you’ll assist Martel with his exploration while hearing about his fascinating and insightful experiences as he ventured through the cave. This unique opportunity offers a true sense of the awe and wonder that Martel must have felt on his original journey.
This event is being run as part of our 2025 celebrations, this year marks 130 years since Edouard Martel first explored the Marble Arch Caves in 1895 and 40 years since the Marble Arch Caves open as a tourist attraction in 1985.
