Make a Traditional Besom Broom in the Walled Garden

About

Join us for a hands-on, heritage-inspired workshop where you'll create your very own besom broom and explore the folklore, tradition, and seasonal use surrounding this tool.

Often used for sweeping autumn leaves from lawns and paths, the besom broom is also steeped in folklore from protective talismans, to symbols of witches, and Samhain celebrations.

They also make a charming rustic addition to your hearth or doorway—especially when adorned with a few twinkling lights for Halloween."

Your tutor Heather McDermott will guide you through the various practical processes including carving and whittling your own broom stick using locally foraged, sustainable, coppiced, birch and rowan....the use of axes, whittling tools and firepits... as well the application of traditional salves alleged said to protect against negative energies and spirits!
