About
Walk the historic Comber Greenway from C. S. Lewis to Niell's Hill with EastSide Tourism. This walk is 1.2 miles.
On Saturday and Sunday 14th and 15th September join an expert guide from EastSide Tourism for a walk through East Belfast's history. On this tour you'll learn more about the development and change of Ballymacarrett to the advent of the railway and the people who called this area home.
Running between C. S. Lewis Square and the village of Comber, the greenway follows the original line of the busy Belfast & County Down Railway (BCDR). The line itself started in Belfast at Queen's Quay and then via a number of small stations and halts it slowly made its way out of Belfast; Ballymacarrett, Fraser Street, Bloomfield, Neill's Hill, Knock, and Dundonald before arriving in Comber.
History Hub Ulster are hosting an event at Neill's Hill, to highlight the history and heritage of the Comber Line and the halt. Guide(s) with EastSide Partnership will provide one guided tour on each day to get that story started.
Meeting at C. S. Lewis Square at 11:00, attendees will learn about the history and development of Ballymacarrett and Belfast's inner-east such as the area's great estates, the villages and "rows" that onc dotted the landscape, the industrialisation that brought not only factories and mechanisation but also enabled the rapid growth that established an East Belfast, and also the key changes wrought by the railway on local and inner city life. The walk will include stops Bloomfield siding as well as North Road Bridge amongst other places, to highlight local areas of interest.
EastSide Partnership also oversees a number of the Belfast's Greenways, and we will have a number of guides available to discuss the role of Belfast's natural history as well as the impact of post-industrialisation on East Belfast.
