About
On Saturday, 14th September, Campbell College invites the public to step inside its historic red-brick buildings and explore over 130 years of architectural and educational heritage as part of European Heritage Open Day 2025.
Visitors will be guided through the College’s listed buildings by staff and students, with each tour offering a unique insight into the school’s rich past and ambitious future. A special exhibition from the College Archive and Heritage Collection will showcase original architectural drawings, rare photographs, and documents that trace the evolution of the campus since its founding in 1894.
The story begins with Henry James Campbell, a Belfast linen-merchant whose bequest led to the creation of the College, and continues with the vision of architect W.H. Lynn, whose designs shaped not only Campbell but many of Belfast’s most iconic buildings. The exhibition will also highlight the College’s role during the Second World War, when its buildings were requisitioned and transformed into a military hospital. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the original wartime plans and learn how the campus was adapted for military use. In addition, the display will feature materials related to three other listed properties once owned by the College—Cabin Hill, Ormiston House, and Netherleigh House.
As part of its long-term development strategy, “Building for the Future,” Campbell College is committed to preserving its historic buildings while enhancing facilities for future generations. This vision will also be explored during the event, with a look at more recent architectural additions and restorations. Guided tours will take place at 13:15, 14:15, and 15:15, each lasting 45 minutes. After each tour, guests are invited to enjoy tea, coffee, and Campbell’s famous shortbread.
Each tour can accommodate 20 people. Visitors can use time before or after tour times to view the exhibit.
