Architect-led tour of Queen's Conservation Area EHOD 2024

About

The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) invites you to attend an architect-led tour of Queen’s Conservation Area from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 14 September 2024. The tour will be delivered by Andrew Molloy from Hamilton Architects and will start from RSUA, 2 Mount Charles, Belfast, BT7 1NZ. There is no charge to attend, but pre-booking is essential.

This unique area of Belfast contains not only one of the highest concentrations of good Victorian buildings in Ireland but also a building of European importance in the Palm House located within Botanic Gardens. Queen’s Conservation Area is located within ½ mile of Belfast City Centre and a short distance south of Shaftesbury Square. It is c.68 acres in total and includes the major open space area of Botanic Gardens (c.23 acres).

The tour will begin with a discussion on what conservation areas are along with a brief history of the conservation movement in Northern Ireland. Participants will then look at a range of buildings across the area; the great, the good and the iconic along with the quieter and – at face value at least – the less remarkable buildings that contribute to the overall character of the area, although these buildings often have remarkable stories and latent histories.  Andrew will focus on the human stories behind the bricks and mortar and give participants a brief history of the builders and occupants of each of the buildings.

The tour will start in Mount Charles with the RSUA building also looking at numbers 38-40 Mount Charles and 1-19 Mount Charles. The group will then make their way to Crescent Gardens to see both Upper and Lower Crescents, the Crescent Arts Centre and the three churches at that end of the conservation area which are Crescent Presbyterian, University Road Methodist and University Road Moravian. The group will then head to Queen’s University where they will hear about the Lynn Building, Lanyon Library, Whitla Hall and Elmwood Hall. Andrew will also talk about the demolished School for the Deaf and Dumb, the Catholic Chaplaincy and the Students Union. Heading towards Botanic Gardens, the group will hear about the demolished gatelodge, the Ulster Museum, the Tropical Ravine and the Palm House.

The tour will finish at 4pm outside Union Theological College.
