About

Park up and start your day out at Whiteabbey Green, situated on the Shore Road, Newtownabbey. Set off along the shores of Belfast Lough and enjoy the sea air as you navigate the picturesque walking route which takes you all the way to Hazelbank, Gideons Green and even into Belfast. 

Loughshore Trail Route  - The out and back coastal trail is easy to navigate and offers different options depending on the length of walk you would prefer. 

Starting at Whiteabbey Green  - Follow the trail all the way to the White House – a fortified house dating from 1569 which tells the story of the Williamite and Jocbite Wars.  Distance: 1.7 miles out and back, 3.4 miles/ 5km in total 

Starting at Hazelbank  - Start at Hazelbank Park and enjoy a visit to the Coronation Garden (designed by award-winning gardener Diarmuid Gavin) before you set off.  Distance: 1 mile out and back, 2 miles/ 3km in total 

For added entertainment, make use of the Time Travel Trails app which provides a GPS enabled map and impressive augmented reality portals to the past. Uncover the rich maritime heritage of the area, exploring its transformation through the centuries into a thriving industrial hub and discover hidden stories of the fascinating people, places and events that shaped the shoreline through the ages. This free trail adds another layer of excitement for family walks and leisure time to help you get outdoors and get discovering.

Additionally, a sensory garden is available at Hazelbank Park with 2m pathways for easy access, sensory shrubs planted on raised beds as well as play equipment including wind chimes, stepping logs, balance beams, musical instruments and mirrors to stimulate the senses. This is a therapeutic and calming outdoor sanctuary for children and adults with autism, dementia and other sensory needs. 

A contactless water refill station is available at Hazelbank Park.
