The canal opened in 1789 for the transportation of coal from Coalisland to Dublin making it a very important industrial heritage site.The canal is a home to a variety of different plants and animals including Fauna, Flora, badgers, owls, yellow iris, banded damselfly, moorhen, dipper, kingfisher, grey wagtail, otters, pike and brown trout.
There is also a three section walk available which is 9 miles (return) long. It starts at the Cornmill in Coalisland town centre and runs along the canal to the point where it runs into the Blackwater river.
Coalisland Canal is open all year around for visitors.
