About
Experience the thrill of road bowling with expert guidance from a true champion in the heart of Armagh.
Road bowling was listed as a national Irish pastime back in the 1880s and placed alongside Gaelic football and hurling in national importance. Today, it thrives primarily in Armagh and Cork, where it remains a beloved local pastime. Traditionally played on quiet country roads of rural Armagh, spectators gather to watch as players hurl an iron bowling ball, locally known as a "bullet" at speeds of up to 80 miles an hour. The rules state that whoever reaches the end of the course with the least throws wins!
Chris Mallon is a lifelong road bowling enthusiast and former chairman of Ból Cumann Uladh - the Irish Road Bowling Association. A passionate advocate for the sport, Chris is mentor to Ireland's most successful female road bowler, Kelly Mallon - who also happens to be his daughter! Through Chris, visitors can learn about the history and significance of this exciting sport before getting to grips with the techniques and skills. Learn how to master the grip, stance, and throwing technique with tips from experienced players before engaging in a fun game of road bowls in the grounds of St. Patricks Cathedral.
