Given the rapidly evolving Coronavirus COVID-19 situation, Carrickfergus Castle is closed until further notice.

Carrickfergus Castle is a Norman castle in Northern Ireland, situated in the town of Carrickfergus in County Antrim, on the northern shore of Belfast Lough.

Besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French, the castle played an important military role until 1928 and remains one of the best preserved medieval structures in Ireland.

For more than 800 years, Carrickfergus Castle has been an imposing monument on the Northern Ireland landscape whether approached by land, sea or air. The castle now houses historical displays as well as cannons from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

A visit will give you the opportunity to see how the Great Hall at the top of the Great Tower has been transformed by the new roof which has greatly improved the visitor’s experience. This space can now be used for historic artefacts, displays and small functions.

See the latest time-lapse video showing the construction of the Great Tower’s new roof from start to finish:

New visitor information displays will take you through the journey of the new roof project and construction works. You’ll also see the newly opened costume room, winch room and chapel.

Carrickfergus Castle is available for small functions and events including weddings, tours, school trips, filming and photography.

Opening times

****CLOSURE OF CARRICKFERGUS CASTLE ****

Given the rapidly evolving situation regarding COVID-19, the Department for Communities has decided to close Carrickfergus Castle to the public from close of business on Tuesday 17 March and to cancel all events planned at any of the 190 State Care Monuments. Our first priority is the health and wellbeing of all of our visitors and staff, and we hope that people will understand why we have taken this unprecedented step.

Whilst Carrickfergus Castle is temporarily closed, and events will not take place, our large number of free to enter sites will remain open to visitors. Many of these sites have large open spaces in which visitors can maintain social distancing and they are often located in quieter spots away from crowds. We hope that people will continue to use these sites, in line with public health guidance.

We will also continue to carry out essential maintenance and preservation works to protect the State Care Monuments.

We look forward to announcing when we will be able to welcome visitors back to Carrickfergus Castle, and would like to thank the public for their support and patience.
