William McCrum Park EHOD 2025

About

World famous site where William McCrum invented the penalty kick rule in football. In 1890 this was the village football pitch.

William McCrum (1865- 1832) son of Robert G. McCrum (the proprietor of the celebrated linen firm of McCrum, Watson & Mercer) was goalkeeper of Milford football Team. Ironically Milford Football Team were bottom of the league at the time but McCrum invented the penalty kick which revolutionized the world of sport. He never got the recognition for it in his lifetime and died in poverty in Armagh. In 1920 the football pitch was moved to the Holm. In 1997 it became under threat of development. There was a global campaign to save it led by Joe McManus and Milford Community Development Association. It became a public park. Its such a sacred spot people have got down on their knees and it attracts film crews from all over the world. There is a bust of William McCrum by D.P Pettigrew and information panels.
