About
Behind the scenes at the Ulster Folk Museum, a huge amount of work goes on to maintain and conserve our unique collections of buildings. As part of European Heritage Open Day on Saturday 13th September 2025, our Built Heritage and Capital Projects Manager, Katherine McClean, will be leading a special guided tour exploring the important work that goes on, and the challenges that are faced, when looking after these buildings. The majority of the buildings in our collection were moved from their original location and rebuilt on site as early as the 1960s - some of the buildings date as far back as the mid-1700s! Look at fascinating examples of heritage building techniques such as thatching and lime parging, see conservation work in action and get a behind the scenes look into buildings that the public don't normally get to access!
Tours will take place on 13th September 2025 at the following times: 11:00-13:00 14:00-16:00. A maximum of 15 spaces are available for each tour
Please meet outside the museum shop at the start of your tour Please check the weather before this event and wear appropriate footwear and clothing – it will involve walking outside on potentially uneven and muddy surfaces. If you have accessibility questions or concerns, please contact us on info@nationalmuseumsni.org in advance. This guided walk is recommended for ages 16+.
