About

A Cultural Bridge Through Time - The last weekend of February, Belfast will once again celebrate one of Ireland's most significant musical preservationists with the return of the Remembering Bunting Festival.

From February 27th to March 2nd 2025, this free festival offers a remarkable opportunity to explore the legacy of Edward Bunting, whose work in the late 18th and early 19th centuries saved countless traditional Irish melodies from extinction.
Born in 1773 to a Catholic mother and Church of Ireland father, Bunting's life was a testament to cultural bridge-building. As church organist apprentice at St. Anne's Cathedral, now Belfast Cathedral, and then, becoming the first organist at St. George's Parish Church, High Street, Bunting's thirty-five years living with the Presbyterian McCracken family in Belfast whilst developing and refining his musicianship skills demonstrated how music crosses religious and cultural boundaries – a message that resonates today. The festival's program both reflects and encourages this historic spirit.

Highlights include a launch event at Belfast Cathedral, with guest of honour, Dr. Colette Moloney, creator of the seminal resource compendium of Bunting's manuscripts, offering further insights on her present continuous research on the collection.

An exhibition of Bunting's original manuscripts at Queen's University's McClay Library, where these precious documents are preserved. At St. George's Church, where Bunting was the first organist, visitors can experience a unique evening that exemplifies both his classical, sacred musical experiences and his evolved love and reverence for the traditional folk music of this island.

To aptly wrap up the festival weekend, Crescent Arts Centre will host an intriguing discussion about Bunting's musical arrangements subject to controversy after his death. The festival's CEOL Project, brings together young artists from different traditions to offer collaborative performances. This year's program features both Highland and Irish dancers performing together, exemplifying the festival's commitment to celebrating shared cultural heritage.

The Remembering Bunting Festival is more than just a historical commemoration – it's a vibrant celebration of how our musical traditions unite communities. As Belfast continues to evolve as a city of culture, this festival stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to bridge divides and create shared understanding. Don't miss this extraordinary cultural celebration, completely free and open to all.
