Open Day at Kiln Wing, Old Cornmill in Bushmills EHOD 2025

143 Main Street, Bushmills, County Antrim, BT57 8QE
Kiln Wing Old Corn Mill

About

To celebrate European Heritage Open Days 2025, The Kiln Wing in Bushmills will be open on Sunday 14th September from 10:00 to 16:00. This is a free event and a chance to explore a beautifully restored part of a 19th-century corn mill. Set beside a rushing river, this unique building retains much of its original character, offering visitors a self-guided tour through heritage architecture and thoughtful conservation work in an atmospheric industrial setting.

Irish Landmark Trust is a non-profit organisation that finds interesting and unusual properties that are in need of conservation, and gives them a sustainable new life. Since 1992, we’ve been turning historic buildings into truly special self-catering holiday accommodation. Our properties range from lighthouses and schoolhouses to castles and gate lodges.

The Kiln Wing is part of the restored 19th century Palmer’s Corn Mill situated on the River Bush in Bushmills, Co. Antrim.  This beautiful wing of the mill is full of character, integrity and has a real sense of warmth and welcome.

For almost 400 years the water from the Bush River has been used by the world’s oldest licensed distillery for its distinctive whiskey, Old Bushmills. Until 1949 it also provided the electricity to power the tramway which took generations of tourists along the spectacular Antrim coastline to marvel at the Giant’s Causeway.

But the river had another important function in the history of the village of Bushmills.  It falls some 18 meters in its descent through the village and in the last century provided water power for several mills. Built in the 1830s, Palmer’s Corn Mill was listed in 1977 by Historic Monument and Buildings of the Environment Service because of the Bush River’s significance in the evolution of power wheels and because it formed an integral part of the village.

The Kiln Wing is testament to just how successfully a building such as this can be re-used as a home and how it is possible to strike a happy balance between conversion and restoration. The original character of the building has been beautifully preserved and many unique elements have been retained.
