About

Step into the past of the Lagan Canal at Navigation House Heritage Day!

Built in 1886, Navigation House served as the residence of the Lagan Canal manager and the administrative office overseeing canal operations. In the early 1900s, the Lagan Canal was vital to Belfast's industrial boom, transporting coal, limestone, and other key materials. Skilled lightermen moved goods between Belfast and Lough Neagh, connecting local industries to broader markets and driving economic growth.
In 2021 Stepping Stones NI acquired the lease and has developed Navigation House into a horticulture and well-being hub supporting people with learning difficulties, disabilities, and barriers to employment. The centre offers a welcoming venue for events and activities, with all proceeds reinvested to support training and employment opportunities.

Join us for Navigation House Heritage Day and experience:

- An open exhibit detailing the history of Navigation House and the Lagan Canal
- Traditional Victorian games for children and families
- Historical displays of maps and photographs
- Hands-on crafts for younger visitors
- Special guest speakers sharing stories of the canal's past

Whether you're a local resident, a history enthusiast, or just looking for a great day out, this event offers something for everyone.
