About
Join us for a powerful performance by South African-born poet and playwright Nandi Jola, as she brings to life the story of Sarah Baartman, a Khoisan woman and her difficult journey to Ireland in the early 19th century.
In her piece Umngqungqo wenthombentle (Rhythm of a Beautiful Girl), Jola blends spoken word, movement, and storytelling to retrace Sarah's footsteps through Limerick and Dublin, and follows the trail of human trafficking, looting and enslavement.
By connecting King Williamstown in South Africa to King Williamstown in Ireland, Jola uncovers links between the two histories and asks us to look inward as well as outward.
This work is inspired in part by Nandi's exploration of South African items in the National Museums NI collections, reimagining their story through Sarah Baartman's life and legacy.
Please meet in the Modern History Gallery on Friday 17th October at 14:00. No booking needed.
