About

Founded by Sorcha, a renowned musician, actress, writer, and scholar, The Causeway Mummers is dedicated to reviving the ancient pagan tradition of mumming on the Causeway Coast.

Sorcha's deep passion for history and culture, combined with her theatrical background and local expertise brings the mystique of masked performances to life.

Mumming is a traditional folk performance, with ancient roots in European winter festivals and rituals, where disguised performers, known as mummers, visit homes to present plays, dances, or songs in exchange for food, drink, or small change. During the medieval and Renaissance periods, it became a popular entertainment form featuring masked figures and dramatic performances. Over time, it evolved into structured plays, typically centred around a hero-combat story where a hero is killed and revived by a doctor. These plays were passed down orally, with variations across regions.

The Causeway Mummers offers an immersive experience that connects the area's rich heritage with creative storytelling. Through mumming, visitors discover the folklore and natural beauty of the Causeway Coastal Route, with its mythical origins, archaeological landmarks, and diverse wildlife, all portrayed through the Mummers' performances. Sorcha's personal love of creative writing and music enriches the experience, as she blends historical narratives with her own compositions. In addition to performance-based programmes, The Causeway Mummers offers an in-depth exploration of the region's culture, heritage, and natural environment, offering an unforgettable cultural experience for locals and visitors alike. You will be exported to the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle and meet our famous legendary characters like, Finn McCool.

Expect a lively performance, tap your foot along to jigs and reels played on fiddle, flute, whistle and guitar.

Experience Causeway Mumming in Portrush Town Hall on Saturday 21st June, Saturday 18th July and Friday 22nd August. Book your ticket now. The experience will include a complimentary glass of local alcohol.

This experience is also bookable by private groups, minimum of 20 or equivalent in charges and Sorcha would be delighted to bring this performance to your heritage event, attraction, venue or other occasion.
