The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) invites you to attend an architect-led tour of Bushmills Courthouse from 11:00 to 13:00 on 13 September 2025.
The tour will be delivered by Andrew Molloy. There is no charge to attend, but pre-booking is essential. The Courthouse has occupied a prominent location on Bushmills Main Street since it was built by the MacNaghten family c.1830. Despite its elevated status as the only three-story building on the thoroughfare along with its distinctive Victorian flourishes in an otherwise Georgian streetscape, it lay derelict for over half a century, finding itself on HED's At Risk Register. The building was saved when it came under the ownership of Enterprise Causeway and, in 2022, work began to sensitively conserve and extend the building, bringing it back into use as a Creative Hub.
Opening in late 2024, the building now provides retail and workshop spaces for local artisans, artists and craftspeople - the 'Creators in Residence' - along with high quality community spaces where the people of Bushmills can come together to engage with each other and the Creators in Residence. Architect Dr Andrew Molloy will lead this tour of the building, explaining the processes required for bringing a troubled Listed Building back into use along with the challenges of providing a high-quality new build extension, not only to a delicate heritage structure but also within the context of a Conservation Area. The tour will be elevated by the Creators in Residence, who will be providing an insight into their own stories and skills along the way, demonstrating how the long and winding narrative of the Courthouse is far from complete.
