Getting to Derry~Londonderry Northern Ireland’s second city and the only completely walled city on the island of Ireland is straightforward from all parts of Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. Whether you’re travelling for a weekend break, a festival, or a scenic journey along the Causeway Coastal Route, you’ll find plenty of easy ways to get here.
City of Derry Airport (LDY) is just 10 minutes from the city centre, offering direct flights from London Stansted, Liverpool and Glasgow. The airport is well connected by road and public transport, with taxis, car hire and regular bus services to the city.
Belfast International and Belfast City Airport are both around two hours away, with onward connections by car, coach or train.
The train journey to Derry~Londonderry is one of the most scenic in Europe, following the Antrim coastline, passing beaches, cliffs and the River Foyle before reaching the historic walled city.
NI Railways operates regular services between Belfast Grand Central Station and Derry~Londonderry, taking around two hours. The train station is located on the Waterside, with a pedestrian Peace Bridge linking directly to the city centre.
Translink Goldline coaches connect Derry~Londonderry with Belfast, Coleraine, Limavady, Letterkenny and Dublin, offering affordable and comfortable travel options.
Within the city, Foyle Metro operates an extensive bus network, making it easy to explore key attractions, from the Guildhall and City Walls to the Peace Bridge and beyond.
Derry~Londonderry is easy to reach by road from across the island:
From Belfast – approx. 1 hour 40 mins via the A6.
From Dublin – approx. 3 hours 30 mins via the M1/A5.
From Coleraine – around 45 mins via the A2.
Car hire is available in the city and at City of Derry Airport, and there’s ample parking in and around the city centre.
Visitors arriving by ferry from Great Britain can sail into Belfast or Larne, both of which are within a two-hour drive of Derry~Londonderry. Stena Line and P&O Ferries operate regular services from Cairnryan (Scotland) to Northern Ireland.
Stena Line operates services between Belfast and Cairnryan, with onboard facilities and crossings of around two hours.
P&O Ferries sail between Larne and Cairnryan several times daily.
Both ports are within easy reach of the city by car, coach or train.
Once you arrive, Derry~Londonderry is compact and walkable, with most attractions located within or close to the historic city walls. Guided tours, cycling routes and public transport options make it easy to explore the wider area, including the nearby Sperrin Mountains.
