The smallest county is always ready with the biggest welcome. You’ll find it in five-star guest houses, homely hotels, cosy cottages, boutique chic and go-as-you-please self-catering options. And rest assured, whether your travelling companions are two-legged or four-legged, there’s something here for everyone.
You really can’t get closer to the action than the Armagh City Hotel (3*). It is - as the name suggests - right at the centre of city life. So it combines all the rest and relaxation you need with activities right on your doorstep. Kids will love the hotel pool and you’ll love the great value, spacious family rooms. It’s a fantastic base for exploring all Armagh has to offer.
Ballydougan Pottery Courtyard Cottages make for a dreamy country retreat. It’s ideal for a break with friends, a romantic getaway or a restful base for a family holiday. There’s golfing and fishing nearby. Or you could try your hand at pottery with classes on site.
Portadown’s Seagoe Hotel (4*) is a firm favourite with families. Much of which is down to the friendly staff who all take a real interest in making your stay as enjoyable as possible. If you like to get out and about there’s plenty to see nearby, such as Moneypenny’s Lock and Ardress House. Or if you’re looking for local café society, try Smyth & Cleaver Foodhall or Chimes.
In the picturesque conservation village of Loughgall, Molly’s Barn is purpose-built for holiday getaways. Catering for just 5, it means you have the house to yourself.
Yet, should you want more company, you’re within easy reach of country parks and museums. And it’s just 5 miles to the Cathedral City itself. Molly’s Barn makes a point of welcoming families, cyclists, golfers, bikers, walkers (with and without their dogs) and many more. Though not at all at once.
Close to the Blackwater Heritage Trail and the historic villages of Tynan and Caledon, College Hall Cottage (4*) is on a family run working farm and part of the original farm building. Walkers, cyclists and anglers feel right at home here in the spacious rooms. With its own boarding kennels, dogs are accommodated too. As are your bikes, with storage facilities available.
Glorious times rule on the stunning Killeavy Castle Estate (4*) at the base of Slieve Gullion. The self-contained Grade A listed castle offers a truly unique experience for a special occasion. The hotel beautifully combines the best of old and new, having been converted from its original form as a mill and a coach house into an elegant contemporary space.
For those who like the independence of self-catering, the Gatelodge is the perfect base for activity holidays. The Estate’s farm and walled garden supply fresh produce daily and if you’re looking to completely switch off and indulge yourself there is a spa which hosts seven treatment rooms, each with their own unique style and purpose.
On the edge of the small village of Magheralin, Newforge House (5*) is a historic family-run country house offering warm hospitality, luxurious rooms and local seasonal food. In fact, you may well be greeted on arrival by the friendly chickens who supply your morning egg. Six individually furnished bedrooms mix splendid antiques with contemporary comforts – each room a tribute to the six generations who’ve lived here through the years.
With a name like Fairylands Country House, it’s clearly a spot that welcomes the little people. Close to the historic Navan Fort, this B&B delivers a magical break away for the grown-ups too.
Your furry friends are as important to us as they are to you. So they’ve got their choice of accommodation too. College Hall Cottage and Ballydougan Pottery Courtyard Cottages are just some of the pet-friendly venues you’ll find on your travels. Though do check with them in advance - to avoid any sad puppy-dog eyes.
There are accommodation options to suit every traveler and every budget. So if that’s given you a flavor of what County Armagh can offer, explore some more.
