Accommodation along the Causeway Coastal Route

As you make your way along the Causeway Coastal Route, you’ll be struck by all you see. In all likelihood, you’ll also be flattened by the sea air and there is no sleep as good as the one you get after a day out by the coast. This famous route can be, as the saying goes, done in a day, but to get the most out of it, you really should take at least two or three. If you decide to take our advice we know some great places to stay.

On clear days you can see as far as Scotland from some of the rooms at the well-established Ballygally Castle Hotel on the east coast. This building has been a feature and focal point on this lovely town’s seafront since the 17th century and it has been welcoming guests to these parts since the 1960’s. All the creature comforts you need are here and its location overlooking the strand and Irish Sea is magical.

At the end of an old stone bridge over the Glenarm River in the village of Glenarm, is the single bedroomed Barbican. This funny little spot with its gothic windows and stone turret staircase was built in 1825 as a type of replica of a miniature medieval castle. If it wasn’t so darn romantic and picturesque, it might seem a little bizarre but it is such a special place, you’re unlikely to ever forget the night you spent here.

If you’re all about the campervan or caravan then look no further than wonderful Watertop Farm near Ballycastle. This Causeway Coast holiday park offers two caravan sites, both providing electric and water connections. They also offer heated toilet and shower blocks and there’s even an area dedicated to dishwashers. As if that weren’t enough, you can have a crack at go-karting, assault courses, boating, trekking and sheep shearing. You’ll be a dyed in the wool fan by the end of your stay here.

Spend some time by yourself and relax at the nearby Salthouse (4*). This luxury eco hotel features a soothing spa and laid-back bar and restaurant. It sits in its own private grounds surrounded by the natural beauty of the Antrim countryside and dramatic views of the coastline. For those with a lust for sea air and fine dining, an overnight stay here is a must.

Further along the Causeway Coastal Route, you’re sure to make a stop at Bushmills. Not only is this the home of the world-famous whiskey, but you can let it be your home away from home for a night or two. The Bushmills Inn (4*) is a slightly unconventional boutique hotel offering the best in fine dining and cosy hideaways. Definitely one for the romantics.

Guests at Blackrock House (5*) (Winner Best B&B/Guest House at the Giant Spirit Awards 2022) in Portrush can savour sweeping views across beaches and headlands before heading out to take on the courses at Portstewart Golf Club and, host of the 2019 Open, Royal Portrush Golf Club. This B&B is a serial award winner and back in 2017 won the award for Best Serviced Accommodation in Northern Ireland. Attentive and friendly staff make this place tick. Not too far from here you’ll find another cracker of a B&B. Cul-Erg House & Kitchen (4*) is situated only a 2-minute walk from Portstewart Promenade.

If you want to stay right on the doorstep of the Giant’s Causeway, then look no further than The Causeway Hotel (3*). Since 1836 visitors have enjoyed its sea views and warm hospitality and it is little wonder it has lasted so long.

By the end of your journey along the Causeway Coastal Route, you might just feel like a night out on the town and Derry-Londonderry is the perfect spot in which to let your hair down a little. If you do decide to stay over, then Ursula Walsh’s Station B&B just outside the city walls is a great wee spot to rest your head in quiet surroundings. If you fancy being in the middle of it all, then book yourself into the Bishop’s Gate Hotel (5*) and spend the night in their spacious penthouse or cosy junior deluxe suites. Alternatively, you could check in to check out the pool, relaxing jacuzzi and great food in The City Hotel (4*).

Whatever you do and wherever you stay, take your time to take it all in and enjoy the warm welcomes and the giant embrace of the people you’ll meet along the Causeway Coastal Route.
