Nestled within Ireland's Hidden Heartlands, County Fermanagh moves at its own pace. A third of the county is covered by water, and it's that landscape - broad loughs, island-dotted and reed-fringed - that sets the tone for everything here.
With gentle beauty flowing through every winding waterway, Fermanagh is where the great outdoors meets great serenity. Whether you're gliding across the water in a kayak or soaking in the stillness of a quiet lakeside, it's a giant adventure - and a giant retreat - all in one.
Explore Enniskillen Town

The only island town on the entire island of Ireland, Enniskillen is a place made for slow exploration: whether that's wandering its historic streets on foot, paddling between islands on a kayak, or by arriving via boat and mooring up for a leisurely stay.
It's also packed with history: the area around Lough Erne was inhabited as far back as the bronze age, while Enniskillen Castle has been standing at the heart of the town for nearly 600 years. The castle is open to the public, with the historic site housing two museums, galleries, displays and exhibitions.
Enniskillen has also recently become a serious destination for foodies. The Enniskillen Taste Experience hosts a guided walking tour of the town that encompasses local eateries and producers, while Rural Sip ventures further afield into true hidden gem pubs that are scattered across the county. For an evening drink it's hard to beat Blakes of the Hollow, a wonderfully intact Victorian pub, while Charlie's Bar is well regarded for its traditional music sessions and pints of Guinness.

A Whole Lotta Lough

Step outside Enniskillen and the wider landscape is as rewarding as the town itself. On Lower Lough Erne, the early Christian monastic settlement on Devenish Island is well worth the trip: take the Erne Water Taxi's Island Discovery tour, which also circles Enniskillen town, for an unhurried introduction to the area.
Further along the lough, the Boatyard Distillery is a vibrant working distillery - the first legal distillery in Fermanagh as of 1890 - which recently became the first distillery on the island of Ireland to achieve B Corp certification and is a fitting stop for anyone interested in heritage, craftsmanship and modern innovation. Belleek Pottery likewise embodies slow craft in the truest sense: established in 1857, to this day it manufactures hand-crafted pottery that's world renowned for its exceptional quality, meticulous crafting process and uniquely distinct porcelain.
Away from the water, Florence Court's 18th-century grandeur and the dramatic natural formations of the Marble Arch Caves offer two very different but equally memorable experiences. Animal lovers and young families will enjoy the Fermanagh Fun Farm, a social enterprise that cares for over 100 rescued animals including cows, sheep, donkeys and rabbits.
For those who want to tie it all together, the Lough Erne Pilgrim Way links 14 significant heritage sites around the lough. Uncover ancient history, local legends and folklore - from the medieval learning centre at Belleisle to the enigmatic stone figures of White Island - and experience one of the most rewarding slow travel routes in Northern Ireland.
