Discover the best of Northern Ireland’s iconic Causeway Coastal Route without leaving your furry friend behind. From scenic walks at the Giant’s Causeway to sandy strolls along White Rocks Beach, this itinerary packs bites, sights, and cosy stays into a perfect 24-hour adventure for you and your dog.

Day 1

Bothy at White Park Bay

Dog Friendly Itinerary Causeway Coast - 01

Start your trip with a laid-back lunch at Bothy, just a short distance from the Giant’s Causeway at White Park Bay. It’s a convenient first stop and a chance to settle in before heading out for the day. Bothy serves coffee, traybakes, sandwiches, and hot food, and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. There is casual indoor and outdoor seating, with a sheltered area at the back, so it’s comfortable even in less favourable weather. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor space, making it an easy and welcoming place to visit with your four-legged companion.

Discover the Giant’s Causeway

Dog Friendly Itinerary Causeway Coast - 02

From Bothy, it’s a short drive to the Giant’s Causeway. Park at the visitor centre and choose to explore at your own pace or follow the audio guide. The visitor centre is open during the day, while the coastal paths are accessible from morning to evening. A shuttle bus is available to take visitors between the centre and the stones if you prefer not to walk. Take time to learn about the geology and local stories before heading down to the basalt columns. The paths are steady and well maintained, with clear views of the coastline throughout. Dogs are welcome both in the visitor centre and along the walking routes, as long as they are kept on a lead. Water bowls are also available at various points around the site.

Overnight at Adelphi Hotel

Dog Friendly Itinerary Causeway Coast - 03

Check in for the night at the Adelphi in Portrush. The hotel is centrally located, making it easy to walk to nearby paths, restaurants, and bars. The rooms are comfortable and updated, with in-room dining and concierge services available to help with any needs during your stay. Dogs can be added to your booking for an extra charge, and the hotel provides beds and bowls. Dogs are also welcome in the bar area, making it easy to include them in your evening plans.

Evening in Portrush

Dog Friendly Itinerary Causeway Coast - 04

Spend the evening in Portrush without needing to drive again. Start at Safehouse, a café bar set in a former bank building. It serves pizza, coffee, and simple dishes made with local ingredients, hosting live music on weekends as well. Dogs are welcome, making it the perfect location to enjoy a meal alongside your furry friend! Afterward, head to the Harbour Bar, a well-known spot overlooking Portrush harbour. It serves a range of drinks, including Guinness, gin, and spirits, in a lively but relaxed atmosphere. Dogs are welcome, although space can be limited when the bar is busy, so visiting earlier makes things easier.

Morning Walk at White Rocks Beach

Dog Friendly Itinerary Causeway Coast - 05

After breakfast, take a short drive to White Rocks Beach. This wide stretch of sand is backed by limestone cliffs and provides stunning coastal views, including sights of Dunluce Castle in the distance. Free parking is available at the main and overflow car parks, and the beach regularly receives Blue Flag status for its quality. Dogs are allowed, though there are seasonal restrictions from 1st June to 15th September. Outside of these dates, it’s a straightforward place to enjoy a walk along the sand and coastline with your dog.

Jam-packed lunch at Slabz

Dog Friendly Itinerary Causeway Coast - 06

Finish your trip with a stop at Slabz in Portstewart before heading home. Slabz is known for its large, made-to-order sandwiches and is open daily, with slightly shorter hours on weekdays. It is close to the harbour and promenade, making it easy to take your meal outside if the weather is nice. Dogs are welcome, and a chicken “pup cup” is available for them!
