About

St Lukes Parish Church is situated in the picturesque village of Loughgall. It was constructed in 1795 using limestone sourced from a local quarry, replacing the previous church, the ruins of which include an almost entire western gable and turret and are located close by.

The church was built on land granted by Arthur Cope of Drumilly and is believed to have been designed by Francis Johnston (best known for building the General Post office on O'Connell Street in Dublin) working under the influence of the famous architect Thomas Cooley (his work includes the Robinson Library and The Royal School in Armagh).

Alterations to the original building were made in the 19th Century. The gallery was added in 1822 and originally ran down sides of the church and across the back with seating for 500 people. The side galleries were later removed in 1865 with the materials appropriated for the purpose of purchasing a new pulpit and desk. The chancel and transepts were added in 1863 and the bell hung in 1848. The large stained glass East window was donated by Anna Cope in 1866 and in the same year the church was consecrated by Archbishop Marcus Gervaise Beresford and dedicated to St Luke. Forty six boys and sixty three girls were confirmed during that service, reflective of the size of the parish at that time (1,633 members per the census of 1861).

The church was extensively damaged in an IRA bomb in 1990, having previously suffered damage in a previous bombing in 1987 and underwent repairs and restoration on both occasions. The most recent installation was the stained glass window in the North transept, installed in 1991 by the Marshall family in memory of their parents. In addition to the beautiful architecture, visitors will have the opportunity to view the various memorials contained within the church, many of which are testament to past Rectors and their service. We warmly invite you to visit this beautiful listed building and learn more about the church, its history and the people of the parish.
