About
Sam's Cottage is a Grade B+ listed thatched building within a clachan (a cluster) comprising another three cottages. Clachans like this were once common features of the rural landscape of Ireland with a cluster of individual farmhouses at the centre of a townland, but these are increasingly rare. Restored in 2024, this clachan now forms one family home with outbuildings. While the thatched cottage is believed to date from around 1820, other parts of the building may be earlier. The listing for a B2-listed part of the building suggests that "the building is likely of late 18th or early 19th century origin, as indicated by the cruck-framed timber roof structure, however it may be earlier". While recently restored and modernised, the buildings retain many of their original features including the bog oak cruck frame and their overall charm is not diminished.
