Hinck is a world famous Assyriologist and decipher of Cuneiform. As a contemporary of archaeologist Paul Émile Botta, who uncovered the remains of the ancient city of Niniveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire. Hincks, along with Sir Henry Rawlinson and Jules Oppert, played a decisive role in the decipherment of a pictorial script on stone tablets from Niniveh. Hincks deduced correctly that this cuneiform writing had been invented by one of the earliest civilisations of Mesopotamia, the Sumerians. A Blue Plaque on the walls of Church Hill House commemorates his outstanding achievement
