About

McCrum grave of McCrum family of Milford House Co. Armagh. Proprietors of the global linen manufacturing firm of McCrum Watson & Mercer.

This extraordinary family revolutionized the linen industry and world of sport. William McCrum senior (1785-1879) came to Milford in 1808 and was first un Ulster to spin flax by dry process. In 1850 his son Robert Garmany McCrum (1829-1915) went to America, returned took over one of his father's flax mills and created the firm McCrum, Watson & Mercer employed 1000 in Milford and 750 in Gillis Mills. R.G McCrum invented double damask linen and built model village of Milford. A genius with hydraulics he built Milford House the first in Ireland to be lit with hydroelectricity. His son William McCrum (1865-1932) is world famous as inventor of penalty kick rule in football. The McCrum family were one of biggest benefactors in Co. Armagh.
