About
Broughshane Museum. A collection of over 8000 item. Most of which are every day articles, that stimulate memories of older visitors, and educate younger visitors as to what life was like for their parents and grandparents. The collection is mainly due to Dr Tony a local g.p. who when on his rounds collected items that were being thrown out. These includes collection of irons, medical items including an early defibrillator, the scales from the local maternity unit.
There is a section on Conflicts, which has a display on the Boer War, where you can find the connection between Ladysmith and Liverpool football club. There are items that provide a link to famous people with a connection to the village, such as Ned Kelly, Field Marshal Sir George White V.C. Famous for the defence of Ladysmith. He gained his V.C. For bravery in the Battles of Charasiab in October 1879 and the battle of Kandahar 1880. The Google entry on Joseph Boyle, compare him to James Bond, and Indiana Jones. The difference between them and Joseph (known as Klondike Joe) Is that the former are fictional characters, all Joes’ adventures can be verified.
A large number of the exhibits relate to country life, find out how you kept the shucks clear before there were any JCBs about. How meals were cooked. The comics parents read, how butter was made. As well as the artefacts on display there’s a collection of videos the History Society has made recording amongst many other things the life Paul and Martha who in the late 1900s were still living the life of the early 20th century, with no running water, electricity or a cooker. The most recent recordings tell the story of the Carnlough limestone quarries as told by people who worked in the quarries.
