From golden sands to pebbled shores Northern Ireland boasts some of the most beautiful coastland in Europe. With stunning natural formations and picturesque backdrops there is something to suit every mood and activity; whether it’s walking amongst the sand dunes, lazing on the white sands or exploring the rock pools. Every haven of the glorious coastline is unique and unforgettable.
The Blue Flag has become the international measure of beaches since it began in 1985. It is a highly effective monitoring system because it measures everything from accessibility for disabled visitors, to the amount of bins provided and the cleanliness of the beaches.
Recently Northern Ireland’s beaches have been recognised for the 29 criteria set by The Blue Flag and six beaches in 2009 have been awarded:
2009 Blue Flag Beaches in Northern Ireland:
Murlough Beach: County Down (1st time achievement)
Benone Beach: County Londonderry
Portrush White Rocks: County Antrim
Portstewart Strand: County Antrim
Tyrella Beach: County Down
Cranfield West: County Down
