Nature and Foraging Tours with HartyCulture

HartyCulture’s guided nature and foraging tours take place in a variety of rural, urban and coastal locations across Northern Ireland. Accessible for all levels of mobility, the tours can last either an hour, two hours or a whole afternoon, depending on the chosen route. The longest tour currently on offer is based in Enniskillen and concludes with a cooking demonstration and the opportunity to taste and savour new flavours, using seasonally available ingredients foraged by us along the way.

Each tour begins with a geographical orientation, discussing the impact of micro- and macro-climates and terra forma on the development of the world around us. We then study, explore and identify the diversity of nature above, below and around us. We see, smell, touch and taste the hedgerow herbs, fruiting bushes, edible flowers, grasses, ferns and wild fungi growing among our native woods and parkland. We discover the bounty of sea-fare along our world-famous North Coast, as well as nourishing, medicinal, practical and poisonous plants galore. We look at geological formations, rock types and soil composition, and how aspect can influence growth patterns. As the occasion arises, we may even experience animal tracking, identify birdsong and introduce other bush-craft skills.

On the average tour, over 50 types of flora, fauna and fungi are discovered and discussed. Although seasonal varieties do change, each route makes the most of Northern Ireland’s lush and fertile landscapes, with something new and unexpected to share and learn on each tour.
