About
Portmore Lough nature reserve is a hidden gem, and the perfect place to experience nature at any time of year.
Come and enjoy panoramic views of the reserve from the viewing platform or take a stroll down the all-weather boardwalk to the hide and watch the wildlife out on the water. In winter, the sight of greylag geese and whooper swans coming in to roost at dusk is unforgettable.
During your visit you may also catch a glimpse of our konik ponies. They graze the land, helping to create the right conditions for wading birds like lapwings to breed. Remember to keep an eye out for Irish hares lolloping across the fields too.
In summer, make the most of the picnic area and allow time to visit the traditional hay meadows alongside the Lough which, at this time of year, come alive with an amazing array of butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies.
Don't forget to explore our wildlife garden too, which is full of homes for birds, insects and hedgehogs all year round.
