About
Thanks to volunteers living within the Broughshane Village area, Little Acorn Wood was planted and a derelict pond with a large area of swampland was converted into a fantastic habitat for ornamental wildfowl.
Since opening, Broughshane Waterfowl Pond is now teeming with waterfowl and other wildlife. It is one of only two places in the world where all seven species of swan can be found. These range from the small Black necked to the large trumpeter Swan.
Come along and enjoy the tranquillity of the ponds and surrounding woodland. You can take walks in the woodland or riverside way and spot the fairy village. You can explore the bug trail and Butterfly corner. You can even visit the Giant’s Yarn where you can take part in storytelling or arrange a storyteller for group visits.
Quirky facts - The species of Swans include Polish Mute, Australian Black, Black Necked, Coscoroba, Trumpeters, Whistlers and Whoopers.
Pavlov had dogs and a bell, their birds love the sound of a lawnmower.
In total over 500 people were involved in the planting of 1.7 hectares. The species planted were oak, alder, downy birch, white willow, scots pine, elder, bird cherry, hazel and crab apple. You might even spot some scary or odd sculptures, when you're out and about exploring!
All dogs are prohibited from the woodland (with the exception of guide dogs).
