Leading off the red trail at the large fish pond, the black trail takes you to a junction where the Black 1 Old Woodland trail separates from the Forest Plots trail. The Forest Plots line both sides of the trail until rejoins the Red trail. The Forest Plots were established from 1965 onwards. Many of the tree species here have not generally been grown in this country within closely and evenly spaced stands. Examples worth looking at are Araucaria araucana (Monkey Puzzle), and Thuja plicata (Western red cedar). These walks are situated in a working forest environment and may be subject to diversion and closure from time to time.
