About

Visitors to Cave Hill Country Park can enjoy panoramic views across Belfast from vantage points on the hillside. Cave Hill Country Park gets its name from five caves, which could be early iron mines, located on the side of the main Belfast cliffs.

The park itself contains a wealth of natural and historical features including Cave Hill, one of the most visible landmarks in Belfast, and Belfast Castle.

There are several archaeological sites in Cave Hill Country Park including the remains of a stone cairn, cashel and crannog. The most spectacular is McArts Fort, an ancient ráth or fort which stands almost 368 metres (about 1,200 feet) above sea level.

Walking Routes -There are three waymarked-trails with various levels of difficulty. The walking trailhead is at the second carpark on the main drive to Belfast Castle from Innisfayle Park.

Cavehill Trail is a 4.5 mile (7.2 km) circular walking route. For this route, you need sturdy walking shoes and clothing for inclement weather. The trail takes in McArt’s Fort. The total ascent of the trail is 256m and needs a good level of fitness.

Estate Trail is a 2.4 mile (3.9 km) circular walking route through the woodland. This follows paths on the lower slopes of the country park. The total ascent of the route is 134m.

Castle Trail is a short 0.8 mile (1.3km) circular trail taking in the gardens in Belfast Castle.
