AboutBorn in Belfast in 1959, Barbara Allen graduated with a BA in graphic design from the University of Ulster in 1982. During a post-graduate course which she completed in 1984, she was able to concentrate on her favourite subject matter, vernacular architecture, especially the Georgian Era.
In 1991 Barbara won a National Trust Arkell Travel Fellowship to Norway. In 1993 she returned to Norway for a major one-woman show in Bergen.
One Family later, three boys, Barbara paid a visit to Portmore Pier at Malin Head and was inspired by the fishermens latest haul, to try a different subject matter. "Our kitchen needed some artwork so I set about a few watercolour paintings of lobster and mackerel. It is a great way to work. I collect the fish, photograph it, sketch it and then eat it!
I have in recent years developed a series of A3 sized prints which are designed as inexpensive artworks , suitable for the kitchen, bathroom, cloakroom or seas aside bolthole. The collection is constantly evolving and to see what is happening you should like me on Barbara Allen Watercolours on facebook.
Meanwhile I still work on other subjects and accept house portraiture commissions. Reconstructing building on paper via water5colour is a speciality ie. piecing together an image based on a collection of family photographs as I did earlier this year with Sydenham Railway Station.
