From the Sperrin Mountains to Gortin Glen, County Tyrone’s great natural spaces make it a superb outdoor playground for young and old alike.

It’s the ideal place for a family break with fun-filled activities abound. So pack up the kids, hit the road and get ready for a memorable family weekend experience.

1. High energy enjoyment

Kick off at Todd’s Leap activity centre, where the family experience lets you choose as many activities as you want from the 20 on offer. They include paintballing, zorbing, zipline, archery, blindfold driving, off road driving, JCB driving, drop zone, rodeo bull and clay pigeon shooting. Load up your list and get some friendly family competition underway.

2. Blessingbourne biking

If you want to bring the dog with you on your family weekend, the place to head for is Blessingbourne Country Estate in Fivemiletown. The country estate offers pet-friendly self-catering accommodation and a host of outdoor activities for all ages. Younger children will enjoy meeting the animals on the working farm, while older children and adults can experience the exhilaration of mountain biking on the estate’s premier trails.

3. Evening eats

All that activity is sure to work up an appetite so a hearty evening meal will be required. The Loco Bar & Grill at the Valley Hotel, Fivemiletown, offers good value and an extensive choice including a kids’ menu. Or check out the family favourite YankeeStar Grillhouse in Coalisland for great American style cooking, ample portions and awesome desserts.

4. Ultimate water sports

Start the day with a splash of water-based fun at Castle Archdale Marina on the shores of beautiful Lough Erne. Ultimate Water Sports offers a range of activities including kayak and canoe hire, water trampoline, water-skiing and wakeboard lessons, and banana boat hire. Wetsuits, water boots and buoyancy aids are provided for all activities.

5. Pony trekking

Dry off and saddle up for a spot of horse-riding through Tyrone’s lush countryside. There are numerous riding schools and stables that offer treks for beginners or more experienced riders. The Forest Stables in Fivemiletown has a river trail while Horse Holiday Farm in Castlederg offers trekking along miles of sandy beaches.

6. Off to Omagh

Head back to Omagh, Tyrone’s county town, to end the day with a meal and a movie. Popular Pizzarama is perfect for an inexpensive fast food meal but if you want more variety head to Grants or Philly’s Phinest, both noted for their excellent steaks and burgers. Then it’s off to IMC Omagh cinema for a relaxing evening in front of the big screen.

7. Ulster American Folk Park

Visit the Ulster American Folk Park, which tells the story of centuries of Irish emigration to America. Step back into eighteenth-century Ulster and see the buildings and streets as they were before passing through the life-sized emigrant ship to emerge on the streets of America. Along the way there’s the chance to help the blacksmith, chalk up a lesson in the old schoolhouse and grab a photo opportunity dressed up in period costume.

8. Picnic at Gortin Glen

A picnic in Gortin Glen at the western gateway to the Sperrin Mountains is a great way to end the family getaway weekend. Follow a waymarked trail through the beautiful countryside and then let the children loose on the wooden play sculpture before enjoying a generous picnic. If you’re blessed with good weather, older kids will love learning to canoe on Gortin Lakes - contact A.W.O.L Outdoor Adventure to arrange a group session.
