The Rinkha

The Rinkha – homemade ice cream since 1921!
Calling in for a delicious ice cream at the much loved Rinkha is a must for anyone exploring the scenic treasures of Islandmagee, The Gobbins and the Causeway Coastal route.

Back in 1921, Mrs Henrietta Hawkins invented their delicious recipe in which all of their ice cream flavours are based! Today this secret family recipe remains the same, although they’ve added a huge variety of interesting and exciting flavours, using only the finest ingredients on the market and all made fresh on their premises.

The Rinkha, something of an institution around these parts, was built in 1937 and boasts a colourful history – it was first a very popular dance hall and community centre until the 1960s - hence the name ‘The Rinkha’, an Irish interpretation meaning place of dance/place of mirth. Today it remains a popular local, family-owned general shop, with ice cream parlour, café and toy store. It’s still owned by the Hawkins family - now the fourth generation!

It’s modern onsite café serves delicious sandwiches and salads, as well as coffees, speciality teas and sweet treats to enjoy at any time of the day. It's also the perfect spot to enjoy one of their incredible ice cream sundaes. With a myriad of fantastic flavours to try, as well as the ever popular vanilla ‘99’ cone, its no wonder customers keep coming back for more!
