The Green Holiday Cottages - The Granary

About

Since acquiring the old mill we have undertaken an extensive renovation project to transform the buildings into modern comfortable holiday homes and create the perfect family holiday location in this tranquil riverside setting. The wonderfully secluded grounds provide the ideal playground for kids of all ages and the peace and quiet of the river walks offer the chance to unwind in a natural idyll.

“Wee Home” is the first of the renovated holiday cottages to be completed in 2016 and “The Granary” has been finished in 2017 both houses are now ready to welcome guests. Both are ground floor 3 bedroom fully equipped holiday homes set in a beautiful riverside location 1 .5 miles from Kilkeel right in the heart of the Kingdom of Mourne.

In the late 1700s the Walmsley brothers from Preston in Lancashire arrived in Mourne to establish themselves as industry leaders in the milling of flax and corn. To this end they sought and were granted permission to build several mills in the Kilkeel area.

Constructed in the early 1800s “ Wee Home Cottage” was one these flax mills. The barn complex followed later to house a corn mill, kiln, granary and store houses to meet the growing demands of expansion in the linen industry. For well over one hundred years The Green was a thriving hub for local business and agriculture while the riverside paths and stepping stones provided the perfect spot for locals to enjoy a Sunday afternoon stroll. Sadly the mill stopped working over sixty years ago and the buildings and machinery fell into a state of disrepair until none of the original workings remained.
