General information

Greyabbey Village Heritage Trail

This walk is supported by an app (downloadable in advance or via QR codes on the complementary interpretive panels) and describes the rich history of Greyabbey village, its spectacular Cistercian abbey and its people. The app works offline so advance downloading is advisable to save data.

Download the app via the links below.

For over 800 years people have been visiting the ancient Abbey, which the village is famous for. Now, at the touch of a button, you can listen to the story of Greyabbey’s origins, of Viking invaders on Strangford Lough, of Scottish settlers who rebuilt the Abbey and developed the village, and of the places of worship which are still thriving today. The audio app, in conjunction with five interpretive panels, will take you from the Abbey to the Lough in a series of fascinating and quirky tales!

Five interpretive panels have been installed in Greyabbey, leading you on a leisurely stroll from the famous Anglo-Norman Gothic Abbey to the Lough shore and the view across to Mid Isle.

If using the app, this walk must start at the car park of St Saviour’s Church, beside Grey Abbey and finish at the National Trust car park at the northern end of the village.  There are however a series of five accompanying interpretive panels throughout the village which are not linear in nature, so anyone starting at either the start or the end point can still enjoy the walk and experience the history.

The app is however definitely the richest way to enjoy the trail, and contains specific directions, taking walkers through the cemetery, the Abbey (including the physic garden) then on through the length of Greyabbey village.
