‘A History of Terror’ is an award-winning city centre walking tour explaining the history of the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the path to peace and reconciliation.

Starting at Belfast City Hall, we visit 7 sites in the city centre where some of the most significant events of the conflict occurred. The tour allows you to explore and understand the most turbulent period in Belfast’s recent past and what it was like to live here during this time.

While walking through the Cathedral Quarter and finishing on the banks of the River Lagan, the tour also explains our peace-building process and demonstrates the reconciliation and regeneration which has taken place in the city since the ceasefires and peace agreement in the 1990’s.

The tour is a way for you to get a real feel for the history of our city, – many of our guests say they have felt transported back in time through the rich and detailed story-telling. You will get to witness how far the city has come from those dark days and see Belfast in a new light.

Our trained guides are conflict historians. The tour is balanced, objective and historically accurate. It is unbiased and suitable for all visitors to Belfast, regardless of how much or little you already know of our troubled past.

The tour lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes and covers 1.5 miles. The meeting point is the front gates of Belfast City Hall.

Recommended age for the tour is 12 years+.

The scheduled tour is currently only available in English.

The tour will take place regardless of the weather. Please check the forecast and dress accordingly. A waterproof jacket is recommended in case of showers, as is warm clothing during the winter months. The city centre is completely flat, so no hills or steps are involved. However we do recommend comfortable footwear.

We can also accommodate private bookings for groups and have an extensive range of tours and activities for study and educational groups. Group tours are also available in Spanish.

Opening times

The tour is normally scheduled to run once per day at 10:30, (Monday - Sunday). Between April and September afternoon tours will also run from Thursday to Monday, starting at 14:00. Advance booking is essential to ensure a tour is running and available on your chosen day.
