Experience a unique food journey that will take you on an adventure along the River Foyle and tributaries from the city to the Sperrins Uplands. William McElhinney, ‘The Seaweed Man’ of Wild Strands will guide you from the Foyle River to Butterlope Farm. Here under the expert guidance of Annie Mullan, an ecologist, farmer and gardener you will explore the wild landscape of Butterlope family farm in the Sperrins. Foraging in the gardens, hedgerows, fields and bog habitats you will pick ingredients for your lunch and learn the traditional, cultural and historical uses of the wide range of plants found there.
On your return, engage into an immersive culinary experience, participating in the preparation of lunch including farm foraged ingredients. A heritage expert, William will present an engaging, experiential and interactive cooking demonstration relating the food source to its cultural landscape, a gastro topographical experience. The meal prepared will be a taste of this landscape and will provide you with a unique insight of some of the outstanding local artisan food products e.g. Tamnagh Dart Mountain Cheese. Enjoy this by the stove side in the farm’s ‘byre’ room, where William will be on hand to answer any questions on cooking techniques and to show you how and why to cook with a selection of wild food. William specialises in all things seaweed and will explain their culinary and medicinal uses.
On return to the city William will guide you to the coastal iconic and historical location of Culmore Point. Here you will view and experience food on the edge, seaweed among other edible treats to be found there. To end this slow adventure William will lead you in an outdoor session of Tai Chi Qigong at this historical setting of the entrance to the Foyle Estuary.
